Week 1 in NYC

As my first week interning with Coren Moore Brides & Maids comes to an end, I am finally learning to navigate the subways, dress for the cold (thirty degrees colder than Houston weather!), and live with three roommates as well as all about the production and sale of bridal gowns.

My high school sets aside three weeks after the Winter Holiday as an Interim Term when the seniors participate in a Career Development program, taking on various internships. I along with eighteen classmates have traveled from Houston, TX to experience the working life in NYC. With all of us working across the city, I come home from work everyday to hear about everyone’s days interning at PR companies, for clothing designers, at CBS, Feed, interior designers and law firms.

A huge fan of Coren’s dresses, I pursued her for the internship not knowing what to expect. Besides the basic information (colors and styles of dresses), I knew nothing about the production and sale of the dresses or what happens in between. This wasn’t a problem. Alex and Sarah welcomed me in, gave me the full tour and guided me as I discovered the different types of fabrics, created labels from order sheets and ran errands.

In just a few days I have seen where fabric is stored and cut, swatches are picked up, cut outs are dropped off, and dresses are sewn.

I have witnessed a bride-to-be try on and fall in love with a dress—the Seraphina with a dark sage sash, which is something I have never seen as none of my friends are getting married quite yet. It was a special experience to see her face light up as she tried on the dress she could see herself walking down the aisle in. I have no doubt by the end of the week I will have my future wedding gown picked out as well as those for my bridal party (all Coren Moore dresses of course), and all I will need is a fiancĂ©!
